Sunday afternoons have become a bit of a haven for me here, its a time to go exploring when everything else is closed and lazy outings through the countryside and its sleeping villages give a sense of contentment and peace. Last Sunday was an exception in Marburg which was hosting a kirchweih/kirmes/kirwa aka village festival. The small streets were crammed with small stalls perched in front of shops with their doors thrown wide open welcoming in the bustling crowds. Art installations competed for space with a clown act in the main square, while at the foot of the village families sold old treasures on flat tables outside their houses winding their way along the riverbank. Flashing lights of funfair rides mingled with screams and smells of popcorn and all things sweet in a small square just over the bridge. Another perk of living in a small town with so many surrounding villages – there seems to be some event on almost every weekend!
