weekend wanderings

Saturday started off with a quick visit over to Fulda, which had a nice small town center, church, orangerie and small castle. In any event it was more picturesque than Giessen, with a street market and stages where okay bands kept a reasonably well tune at the village festival. The highlight was without a doubt the cakes my friend had baked – at last some German cheesecake, and a delicious blechkuchen with apricots, blueberries and butter-streusel. Mjam!

Feeling restless the next day after having stayed out for most of the night at a warehouse rave in Frankfurt a trip to Marburg was in order. Marburg is a sweet little down near Giessen where the Brothers Grimm lived. The small quaint old town center is packed with beautiful old houses and statues dedicated to the stories of the two brothers, such as the frog prince perched on a wall or (an oversized) cinderellas shoe resting on the hillside. THe castle is quite spectacular, with a “witches tower” and leads off to a nice little rose garden which will be the setting for an outdoor cinema in a few weeks. The short walk left my stomach rumbling, and there is no shortage of cafes offering various delicious breakfasts at very decent prices. To be noted is cafe vetter for its student breakfast which leaves the small tables overflowing with plates, and cafe Klingelhofer for their cakes. And Buckingsgarten biergarten just for their view over the town and surrounding countryside, I’ll have to return to check out the food another time.

What follows is the obligatory selfie with a little difference. I stopped off for a visit to the hairdresser last week and asked her to make it healthier. In short I left with half of my hair gone, but with it now resting just on my shoulders – perfect for summer!
